DESCRIPTION

“Sandstone” is an exceptional recreational property and adjoins some of the 70,000 acres owned by the New River Gorge National Park. Fronting about 1500′ on the River Road, there are several nice building sites with views of the New River and high mountain vistas making this the perfect place to build your getaway cabin. Lot’s of wild turkey, white tail deer, songbirds and small furry critters call Sandstone home.

Just how big is 288 acres?…. Well, it’s just over a three mile hike around the property boundaries and the vertical elevation rises from about 1400′ to almost 3000′.

Sandstone is much more than just real estate; it is an opportunity for adventure. In sight of the New River and just minutes to Bluestone Lake, Bluestone State Park and Pipestem Resort, the area around Sandstone offers unlimited soft recreational activities including white water rafting, golfing, fishing, camping, hiking, bird watching and rock climbing. Snow skiing at the Winterplace Resort is less than an hour away. In ten minutes you can catch the Amtrak train in Hinton and ride to the Greenbrier Resort, Chicago or New York City. The Beckley Airport is just 45 minutes away.

The New River is the second oldest river in the world, preceded only by the Nile; it is the oldest river in North America. The New River is unique because it begins in Blowing Rock, N.C. and flows north through Virginia into West Virginia. The Nile and Amazon are the only other major rivers that also flow north. Year after year, it produces more citation fish than any other warm water river in WV. Small-mouth bass, large-mouth bass, crappie, catfish, sunfish, hybrid stripped bass, and muskie are all common species of fish found in the New River and Bluestone Lake.

Bluestone Lake is over 2000 acres at summer pool and is the state’s third largest body of water. Great hunting and fishing opportunities abound at the 17,632 acre Bluestone Wildlife Area adjacent to the park and nearby Camp Creek State Forest.

The owners had some of the timber selectively harvested in 2003 and several miles of trails were put in place at that time. These trails are suitable for hiking, horse back riding and four wheeling. Lot’s of young trees were left in place and make for a great investment as Mother Nature supplies the sunshine and rain to help them grow. About 38 acres of “Old Growth” timber on the front of the property was not harvested and there are some fantastic building sites on this area, all overlooking the New River.

Directions

From the Sandstone–Hinton Exit #139 on I–64, take Route 20 South about 11 miles through Hinton until you cross the bridge over the New River. Immediately take a right on the Sandstone Falls / River Road and follow along the river 5.9 miles. There is a gravel driveway on the left with a locked chain across the road. This is the entrance of the private lane leading through the property. Look for our yellow For Sale Sign. There is a little cabin and barn just across on the right hand side of the hardtop). You will need a key for the lock.
